"La musique malgré tout" (Music after all) (2014)

Starting April 2014, and as part of the commemorations of World War I and of the project "La vie encore" (Still alive!), offered by the five French Museums of Vosges, the exhibition "La musique malgré tout" is intended to give the visitor an opportunity to discover the life of musicians and stringed instrument makers who practiced their art and know-how during the war in difficult conditions, on the rear lines, or in the prison camps, but also in Mirecourt, in Paris or in exile during these terrible times. The course ended with this episode of this stringed instrument making as a "makeshift or recovery-based" activity, which is still valued by certain musicians today.

"Danses et Sabots" (Dances and Clogs) (2013)


Sounds and gestures are highly fleeting and very brief. This exhibition focuses on two intangible worlds of the cultural heritage, music and dance, and offers three guiding threads for the visitor to go through the exhibition:
• Each music and each dance has its own stories
Let us walk along with the historians and the anthropologists, from the Greek lyre to the vinyl turntable, or from the court ballet to the performance, and try understanding what music and dance tell us?
• Like music, dance is written down
With the composers and choreographers, let us discover and question the media for the transmission of works.
• The fair, the dance, and the scene
With the musicians and the dancers, let us look at, listen and move in many different ways, let us relive the first dance with the village elders; let us widen our sound and dance perspectives with the younger generations.

“Luthiers, de la main à la main” (Stringed Instrument Maker “From hand to hand”) (2011)


It was at Mirecourt that have forged the French tradition of violin and bow making what is now an essential part of musical heritage and craftsmanship of Lorraine. Heritage underpinned by skills and values that are passed to this day.
The exhibition "Stringed-instrument makers, from hand to hand” explores the different facets of this universe. From the side of the craftsperson – How to become stingedinstrument or bow makers ? copy or draw on the instruments of the past, create new ... to adapt to music played. From the side of the musician - learn, play and choose his instrument ... And finally from the side of the curious - try a music instrument, understand the manufacturing and discover the atmosphere of a workshop ...

"Transmission " (2009)

Where does one learn stringed instrument and bow making? At the school, in apprenticeship, in the workshop? What is transmitted? Know-how, know-how-to-be, materials (wood, tools), a workshop, brands, commercial signs, reputation? On the basis of some typical examples, the visitor can discover the men who made of Mirecourt, the cradle of French stringed instrument and bow making. The exhibition comprises 8 sets of topics: "Parcours professionnel" (Professional career), "De père en fils" (From father to son), "De maître à élève" (From Master to Apprentice), "Les apprentis en herbe", (Young Apprentices), the space dedicated to young audiences, "Le livre, support de transmission des connaissances" (The book, knowledge transmission medium), "A la Ville de Crémone" (To the Town of Cremona), or the transmission in Mirecourt of an iron mark, of a label and a commercial sign, "Un atelier, des luthiers" (Workshop, stringed instruments makers), or the transmission of a workshop, and "L’atelier visitable" (Workshop open for visit), some steps away from the Museum…

"En avant la musique !" (Off we go !) (2008)

This exhibition is changed every year and offers the opportunity to discover some new topics, selected based on the collections of the Museum. Such topics with a local background are more largely open to the world, according to the instruments and musicians involved…
The exhibition presents:
- stringed instruments of various historical periods and designed for specific musical styles. Choose the type you prefer: violins, guitars, mandolins…
- instruments manufactured by craftsmen of today or yesterday, in a workshop. The gestures and the tools of the stringed instrument maker and bow maker…
- instruments produced in series at the industrial facilities of Thibouville - Lamy, Laberte and Couesnon: three factories which have marked the local economic history for one century (about 1860 - 1960)
- instruments geared to a specific repertory: an ensemble formed by two violinists, a violist and a violoncellist interprets the quartet, the musical form typical of Western music…

"La musique arabo-andalouse" (Arabo-Andalusian Music) (Spring 2007)

Get immersed in the Arabic and Andalusian origins of a music dating back to the ninth century in the Middle-Eastern and Western worlds. Discover some typical instruments ranging from `ud to bendeyr, including kemângeh…

"Acoustiques, électriques… Les instruments s’adaptent aux musiques actuelles" (Traditional, electric… Instruments evolve to play today's music) (2004)

The exhibition was intended to show how – from blues to jazz, pop to rock, reggae to world music - the stringed instrument makers and the musicians work together to create and distribute the instruments and musical styles appreciated from larger audiences. More precisely, how the shift from traditional instruments to electro instruments occurred! About sixty photographs of artists on stage illustrated this "staging" of today's music.
To complete the tour, interactive listening posts were available to initiate the visitors with the various existing tones: "clean" tones, "saturated" tones, "dirty" tones, "warm" sounds, "cold" or "distorted" sounds of guitars, basses and violins.

"Lutherie de fortune, fortune de lutherie" (Makeshift stringed instrument making, and Fortune of stringed instrument making" (2003)
The exhibition was presented in the Mirecourt covered markets May 4 - September 28, 2003.

It had three sections:
"Lutherie de fortune" highlighted popular instrumental making. About fifty instruments – private collection of Claude Ribouillault – demonstrated the creativity of amateur craftsmen and sometimes of brilliant inventors.
"Fortune de lutherie" or "The backstage of the Museum" presented and explained the work of preservation of the Museum collections of instruments.
Acquisitions, inventory list, preservation, documentation, research: each task of the Museum was presented by means of a reconstitution. All these tasks are the prerequisites that make possible to build exhibitions for the visitors. "L'atelier de Lutherie" (The stringed instrument making workshop) was a didactic exhibition showing the different stages in the manufacture of a stringed instrument and of a bow. Wood for stringed instrument making, benches in situ, tools in window, apprentices of the French National School of Stringed Instrument Making at work, and video showing the work of the stringed instrument maker: all media designed to share living and dynamic know-how.
